DSN, Doctor of Science in Nursing, Latina Nurse

November 21, 2014

I am a woman of Puerto Rican ancestry who was born in New York. Since late adolescence, I have been dedicated to my career in nursing, completing both my BSN and my MSN at XXXX College. Now 41, I am a nurse who has time to develop a great deal of passion about patients, and to have strong feelings about the importance of providing adequate care to everyone, irrespective of their socio-economic background. I am especially knowledgeable about and concerned with our geriatric patients. I feel strongly that a wealthy society such as ours can afford outstanding nursing care for our elderly patients irrespective of their ability to pay and I want to devote the balance of my life to this cause.

10 years from now I would like to be teaching in a BSN program. I have heard it said that one never fully learns a subject until they teach it. I have another academic research interest in nurse-nurse relations, especially in terms of hostility, what provokes it, and how it is best managed. Most of all, however, I want to dedicate my professional life to investigating how to best go about improving patient outcomes, especially for geriatric patients; and, most particularly, those geriatric patients that are indigent, or come from families of scare resources. Despite the fact that I was born in America, I have retained my Spanish as part of my family tradition and I especially prize my opportunities to use it on the job. I feel strongly that nurse-patient communication needs to take place in the language that they know best, both of them. I am pleased that there is a great demand for bi-lingual nurses who also speak Spanish.

I have over ten years of nursing experience in our hospital’s Progressive Care Unit working primarily with patients on telemetry and mechanical ventilators. I am currently a charge nurse on a 25 bed step-down unit serving a high volume of cardiac patients. I perform clinical nursing assessments, develop, and implement nursing care plans, provide cardiac monitoring, ventilator monitoring, and weaning protocols. I educate patients and their families and assist with discharge planning. I also provid orientation for new nursing staff. Prior to this position I spent three years providing nursing care throughout Westchester County and the North Bronx. I performed assessments, administered medications, cared for wounds, changed dressings, etc. I especially enjoyed my collaboration with multidisciplinary teams in the development of comprehensive care plans. I also very much enjoyed providing emotional support and respite care to families in this position.

In my free time, I often volunteer in a hospital setting. Most prominently, I have devoted countless hours to Heart-to-Heart Seminar, doing blood pressure screenings, Safety Fairs, Flu administration, infection control education for the community in both English and Spanish, I move around in volunteer circles because I see this as an important aspect of a professional nurse that looks forward to fulfilling a leadership position in her field, especially if I am admitted to your distinguished program so that I will have an education in nursing that is among the finest. I take special pride in my contribution as a Puerto Rican woman to the celebration of diversity in the medical community

The greatest contribution that I might be able to make to society would be to help to expand our nursing knowledge base through research and education to diminish health disparities in the community. I am confident that my dedication, hard work, and strong will to achieve success will help me to excel in your program. I am confident that your distinguished faculty will help me to realize my dream. I would consider it a special honor and privilege to have the opportunity to pursue my education at the XXXX Graduate Center. Thank you for considering my application.

Working together as a team we strive to create the best personal statement possible, to give you an advantage over other applicants to nursing school. I am an experienced professional who has read and edited thousands of  Personal Statements and Statements of Purpose. Most editing services only focus on the technical aspects of the statements: grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Instead, I consider the more important aspects; personal tone, flow, and content. Most importantly, I help you express your creative ideas with respect to your long term goals and your contribution to humanity and society. The final product of my editing may be the beginning of your professional success, a solid investment in your future.

I have been drafting statements on behalf of nurses now for the past 20 years. Writing statements is not always fun, and the older I get the more mental and emotional energy it takes for me to do a good job. This is one of the reasons why I have developed a priority focus on nurses, writing more statements in this area than any other, because I admire the dedication of nurses, their orientation of service and giving. Nurses are generally among the finest people on the planet, on human and emotional levels, because of their ethic of service. Thus, when I help a nurse succeed, I am inspired by her/his story.

I have spent many years investigating what makes a Statement for admission to nursing school as effective as possible, what programs and institutions in the area of nursing are looking for in applicants: specific qualities, interests, and characteristics--all of which I will emphasize in your essay. Character is especially critical and I am an expert at making you look exceptional. It is all in the wording and I like to think I have a natural gift for statement expression. My own special strength is in the emotional eloquence of nursing. I admit that on a few occasions, tears well up in my eyes while writing a statement for nursing school; it is a most enriching experience and I count myself most privileged.
