MSN Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

May 30, 2017

I am currently studying in the MSN program, Public Health track but seek to pursue the PMHNP program as I wish to serve as a pediatric psychiatric nurse. This decision has been made after much thought and arises primarily, though not entirely, through personal experiences.

My son, Nicholas, was diagnosed as autistic at age 2 and a half, six years ago. This was the start of a long journey of learning about his condition and seeking the most effective treatments. We tried many kinds of therapy including physical, occupational, speech, oxygen and even acupuncture. However the most effective treatment was provided at The Children’s SPOT at XXXX Hospital where Nicholas has been treated for the last three years.

It was attendance at this hospital that inspired me to seek nursing training but it was not my immediate intention to become a psychiatric nurse however I have felt more and more drawn to this specialty and especially pediatric psychiatric nursing as time has passed and it has now crystallized into a passionate ambition. Our family has been the beneficiary of the services of an excellent psychiatric nurse. When she entered our lives, we were still reeling from the diagnosis, although made several years previously, we felt alone, confused and afraid for the future but she listened over many hours and provided reassurance, empathy, comfort, information and effective treatment. Her confident optimism about Nicholas’ condition and prognosis was ‘catching’ and we gradually came ‘out into the light’. I wish to emulate this excellent nurse.

I understand that desire is not, in itself, enough and the specialty calls for specific and uncommon qualities and I would definitely not pursue this ambition if I were not convinced that I possess those characteristics together with the determination to apply myself diligently and enthusiastically to acquire the necessary and wide ranging specialist skills and knowledge that the program offers. I also believe that my personal experiences have not only provided me with a comprehensive understanding of autism specifically but that those experiences enable me to empathize with patients and parents at an unusually deep level.

I am aware that the role of entails significant autonomy and a high level of responsibility towards patients, their relatives and the profession. I have carefully studied the many competencies called for in the role and realize that they are not easily acquired but I shall apply all my determination and diligence in order to attain them.

I am Chinese, raised in China and married to a Caucasian. I have interacted happily with people of many different social and cultural backgrounds in my studies, social life and work to date. I enjoy sharing knowledge about my own culture and learning from others about theirs. I know that cultural awareness is exceptionally important in the field in which I seek to work and that it will be necessary for me to extend and deepen this area of my learning. Because of my family circumstances and cultural background, I regard myself as being particularly sensitive to non-verbal communication which is particularly important in the treatment of children and especially those with those needing psychiatric care.

According to a report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics, one in one hundred and fifty children are diagnosed as being autistic. The American Autism Society estimates that the cost of lifelong treatment can be reduced by two thirds with early diagnosis and intervention, so the matter is of significant economic importance to the country and its health services. I have noted that the proportion of children diagnosed with autism varies quite widely between different developed nations. It is apparently unclear whether these differences arise because of disparities in the methods and accuracy of diagnosis or from genetic and/or cultural effects. Clearly more research is necessary in this matter and I should be very interested in assisting in such research if the opportunity were to arise.

While much of this paper, so far, has related to autism I am, of course, aware that I will be involved in the treatment of many other types of conditions. I know that the role has a vital diagnostic component which is the basis of everything that follows and will call for an ability to collect, record and analyze accurate data, I am a well-organized person and I believe that I possess the basic abilities and potential to become an excellent diagnostician.  I am also aware that working within this specialism may expose me to some very distressing facts and situations and that I will sometimes be required to call on reserves of emotional strength and an ability to separate emotion and compassion from the dispassionate need to heal through effective treatment.

Skills can be taught, competencies acquired, lessons learnt and so on but the essential component in all nursing in my view is the ability to see each patient as precious no matter how challenging their behavior, to empathize, to show and genuinely feel warmth towards the patients and their families to know when to squeeze an arm in encouragement, when to smile and share a joke and when to listen patiently and attentively. These character traits are important in all nursing but I recognize that they are of particular and basic importance in the field of pediatric psychiatry and would not seek to pursue this application if I were not confident that I possess them.

To summarize, I am applying after very careful research and consideration, confident that I have the potential to become an excellent pediatric psychiatric nurse. I look forward ‘adding value’ to the program by sharing the fruits of my own experience and background and receiving the benefit of those acquired by my fellow students.

Thank you for considering my application.

I have been drafting statements on behalf of nurses now for the past 20 years. Writing statements is not always fun, and the older I get the more mental and emotional energy it takes for me to do a good job. This is one of the reasons why I have developed a priority focus on nurses, writing more statements in this area than any other, because I admire the dedication of nurses, their orientation of service and giving. Nurses are generally among the finest people on the planet, on human and emotional levels, because of their ethic of service. Thus, when I help a nurse succeed, I am inspired by her/his story.

I have spent many years investigating what makes a Statement for admission to nursing school as effective as possible, what programs and institutions in the area of nursing are looking for in applicants: specific qualities, interests, and characteristics--all of which I will emphasize in your essay. Character is especially critical and I am an expert at making you look exceptional. It is all in the wording and I like to think I have a natural gift for statement expression. My own special strength is in the emotional eloquence of nursing. I admit that on a few occasions, tears well up in my eyes while writing a statement for nursing school; it is a most enriching experience and I count myself most privileged.
