MSN, Cuban Applicant, Missions to Nicaragua

November 21, 2014

My application to your distinguished Master’s in Nursing Program at the University of XXXX is inspired primarily by my job as an ER nurse at the XXXX Medical Center in XXXX. I began serving here shortly after finishing my BSN Degree in May of 2012. Prior to that time, I spent more than a year here working as an ER Technician. I believe that I have gravitated almost automatically towards service in the area of Emergency Medicine because of my extensive military experience, as a Hospital Corpsman with the US Navy, to which I gave my all for 6.5 years from June of 2002 through December of 2008. Serving my country at home and abroad, I was especially pleased to provide medical care not only to service members, but also needy and underprivileged people in area where I was assigned. In fact, I hope to distinguish myself in your program as an excellent student and someone who is especially sensitive to and concerned with the needs of the medically underserved.

I am Cuban American, born and raised in Florida, and my wife is from Nicaragua. Her family has adopted me as one of their own and I am growing increasingly fond of her country. This is what brought me to the point of wanting to someday establish a primary care clinic in Nicaragua. I look forward to serving as a Family Nurse Practitioner for many decades to come, investing a lot of my energy in research geared towards the creation of public awareness programs concerning the prevention of cardiovascular disease, especially prominent among Hispanics. In particular, I want to address the way in which it is both culturally and economically driven.

I feel fortunate to have gotten to the point where I am in life, given the fact that my grandmother was almost my only parent growing up, first absent then in jail until I was 17 I barely got to know my mom as a child. My father came to see me only once and a very great while from the age of 6 forward. Most recently they have both been kind to me, consoling me concerning the loss of my grandmother.

There are many reasons why I am choosing UXXX in addition to its excellent reputation. I have a number of personal contacts, friends who have studied in your program and took the time to share their marvelous experiences with me. Also, your rigorous, full-time program would allow me to complete 1/3 of the program with my GI bill scholarship left over from the military. Furthermore, I live close by and could spend more time studying and less time driving. Finally, on a personal level, my wife is in her mid-30s and wants to have a baby and I am telling her that I want to finish my Master’s first.

One of the greatest assets that I hope to bring to your program is my extensive experience in patient monitoring as part of a highly interdisciplinary team in Emergency Medicine, since August of 2012. I am now fully immersed in that fine art of dealing with patients suffering from pain, stress, shock and grief—managing and comforting their families as well. I have been involved in the management of patients in all categories in our Emergency Department and I am skilled at intubations, defibrillations, autotransfusions, IV starts, A-line setups, splinting, suturing and more. Often, my Spanish comes in most handy. On some occasions, I have supervised LPN’s and ER Technicians and I hope to continue to advance in the cultivation of my leadership skills, especially as a result of completing your distinguished program at XXXX University.

Growing up on the move as a military child helped me to appreciate diversity. Beginning in 2002 I would follow in my father’s footsteps and join the military myself, serving alongside Marines, Navy, Army, and Foreign military. For every patient that I served I valued their health above my own, for almost 7 years. I have earned my undergraduate degree with distinction and I am now ready for that next hill to climb, the next challenge, becoming an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse. It is my passion in life to help others and I know this program and degree will give me what I need to achieve my goal.

Still in my early thirties, I hope to become deeply involved later on in my career with medical missions and sustainable public health development in Nicaragua, my newly adopted country. For decades to come as I labor in both Central and North America, the Master’s Degree that I hope to earn at XXXX University will continue to inspire and empower me at every turn. I thank you for considering my application to your very special program.

Working together as a team we strive to create the best personal statement possible, to give you an advantage over other applicants to nursing school. I am an experienced professional who has read and edited thousands of  Personal Statements and Statements of Purpose. Most editing services only focus on the technical aspects of the statements: grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Instead, I consider the more important aspects; personal tone, flow, and content. Most importantly, I help you express your creative ideas with respect to your long term goals and your contribution to humanity and society. The final product of my editing may be the beginning of your professional success, a solid investment in your future.

I have been drafting statements on behalf of nurses now for the past 20 years. Writing statements is not always fun, and the older I get the more mental and emotional energy it takes for me to do a good job. This is one of the reasons why I have developed a priority focus on nurses, writing more statements in this area than any other, because I admire the dedication of nurses, their orientation of service and giving. Nurses are generally among the finest people on the planet, on human and emotional levels, because of their ethic of service. Thus, when I help a nurse succeed, I am inspired by her/his story.

I have spent many years investigating what makes a Statement for admission to nursing school as effective as possible, what programs and institutions in the area of nursing are looking for in applicants: specific qualities, interests, and characteristics--all of which I will emphasize in your essay. Character is especially critical and I am an expert at making you look exceptional. It is all in the wording and I like to think I have a natural gift for statement expression. My own special strength is in the emotional eloquence of nursing. I admit that on a few occasions, tears well up in my eyes while writing a statement for nursing school; it is a most enriching experience and I count myself most privileged.
