MS, Nursing Masters, Palestinian Woman, NP

November 20, 2014

I would like very much to attend your program leading towards the Masters Degree in Nursing because your program is exceptional in quality and location. I wish to become a highly professional nurse practitioner because of the intense joy that I find in helping others, especially those who are sick. I am a woman who has always had to struggle in life to achieve what I have. I think this is largely because I was raised in a family environment where the importance of education was downplayed and not taken seriously at all. My family, as typical in Arab societies and we are immigrant Palestinians, is also highly patriarchal and I was a little girl, destined by my family, especially my father for a life of service to a husband and children rather than a professional career. Thus, I have spent much of my life overcoming these stereotypes and assisting upon and achieving an education on my own.

I have known ever since I was a little girl that I wanted to make some kind of a difference in the world; that I wanted to struggle somehow to make the world a better place with less suffering. Being Palestinian, a long suffering and historically persecuted people has probably fortified my serious nature and made me especially sensitive to questions of oppression and injustice. What became especially clear to me early on was the profound joy that I derived from working in the field of health care, becoming increasingly obvious as time went on; thus, I came to see it as the natural option. I blossomed socially in High School and joined several different student clubs at school. I also began serving a leadership role in my family, helping to resolve conflicts that arose between family members. I have slowly become convinced that I have a gift from God that allows me to be especially effective in providing comfort to those who suffer. I find special joy in taking care taking care of the elderly and those who are well sick.

Both my mother and grandmother have been seriously ill for years, especially the latter, suffering from a variety of illnesses. I have generally been the one take my grandmother to her appointments, help her to bathe, and prepare diabetic friendly meals. Both of them being ill has helped to inspire me to pursue nursing as my career. Another source of profound inspiration for me was Hurrican Katrina in 2005. Seeing to many people suffer in front of my eyes made me wish that I could become a nurse so as to be better qualified to able to help victims of suffering. As I have matured, I have come to more fully appreciate that this is my dream, my destiny that I need to fulfill.

Beginning while still a teenager, I have long distinguished myself as a volunteer; homeless shelters, youth centers, helping single mothers, tutoring children and young adults, especially about diet and health care. I have especially enjoyed working at community Health Fairs and this also caused me tofall in love with Nursing. I have especially appreciated the opportunity to work alongside nurses, learning from them, and observing the great benefit that they bring to society and watching what they did to make a difference in the community.

I have realized that nursing is the perfect profession for me because nurses are the people who never stop caring and are always there to help, which comes natural to me. My ultimate dream in life is to have a job that I truly enjoy, one that enables me to help people, especially to help them get well when they are sick and to protect their physical and emotional health. I especially look forward to doing research in the area of preventative medicine and how to reduce infections that result from surgery. I find infections that result from surgery to be very interesting because both my mother and grandmother have suffered from very bad post-surgery infections.

Becoming a registered nurse with a Masters degree will enable me to achieve my goal. I see nursing as a very special profession that requires a lot of both intelligence and heart. I feel as though I already have the heart for the career and now I need to learn the skills. My long term goal is to become a community health educator and help underprivileged families. Since I am myself from an underprivileged group of hardworking people who have had to struggle to have anything in life, I am empathetic to the needs of minority groups and those who have modest economic resources. I also look forward to continuing to volunteer, as a nurse, doing my small part at helping to bring health care to devastated areas of the Developing World.

One of my favorite expression is that “gifted leadership occurs where heart and soul meet, allowing the leader to soar.”Both my heart and my mind agree that nursing is truly the right job for me. I whole-heartedly want to pursue my dream and I will work as hard as I can to succeed, giving my all to your program. I want to be an excellent example for the young women of future generations that nothing can stop a person from pursuing their dreams when heart and mind work together for the long term. I want to thank you for considering my application to your program.

I have been drafting statements on behalf of nurses now for the past 20 years. Writing statements is not always fun, and the older I get the more mental and emotional energy it takes for me to do a good job. This is one of the reasons why I have developed a priority focus on nurses, writing more statements in this area than any other, because I admire the dedication of nurses, their orientation of service and giving. Nurses are generally among the finest people on the planet, on human and emotional levels, because of their ethic of service. Thus, when I help a nurse succeed, I am inspired by her/his story.

I have spent many years investigating what makes a Statement for admission to nursing school as effective as possible, what programs and institutions in the area of nursing are looking for in applicants: specific qualities, interests, and characteristics--all of which I will emphasize in your essay. Character is especially critical and I am an expert at making you look exceptional. It is all in the wording and I like to think I have a natural gift for statement expression. My own special strength is in the emotional eloquence of nursing. I admit that on a few occasions, tears well up in my eyes while writing a statement for nursing school; it is a most enriching experience and I count myself most privileged.
