NP Adult Gerontology, Haitian

May 30, 2017

I hope very much to be accepted to XXXX University not only because of its convenient location not that far from where I live and work in Massachusetts, but also the sheer excellence of your program and the sophisticated and comprehensive nature of your Adult Gerontology NP track, which I plan to complete if accepted. My sense of geriatric nursing as my highest calling goes all the way back to my high school days, working as a Nurses’ Aide at a nursing home. I was the kind of socially conscious and sensitive adolescent who quickly bonded with older people and I have had my sights set on a career in geriatric nursing for a very long time.

Among the many areas and aspects of geriatric nursing, I am most interested in the mental health issues faced by the older people for whom we care. I have also been engaged in mental health issues for a long time I think primarily because I grew up in Haiti were mental illness is not even generally recognized as a disease. This resulted in a lot of personal suffering on my part due to the fact that I was one of only 2-3 caregivers growing up for my severely mentally ill brother.  I will probably continue nursing in the USA until I draw my first social security check. But if my legs last as long as my heart, I plan to spend another couple of decades or so as a nursing leader, in Haiti. With the devastating earthquake in Haiti a few years ago, a lot of people lost limbs, suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, increasingly as they age; life becomes difficult for many if not most who have no one to care for them. I went to Haiti on a mission right after the earthquake and worked in support of a gerontology nurse practitioner, helping with care, translating, dispensing medication, doing a lot of counseling. I never felt so needed in my life. This is what I find most satisfying and it will continue to drive me until I am myself too old and sick to care for others, helping my patients. Advance nursing practice will provide me with the preparation that I need to diagnose, prescribe, and manage overall care. Completing your program will allow me to realize my fullest potential as a nurse here in Massachusetts and then to make my greatest professional mark on life in the area of mental illness in Haiti, especially among our older ones.

Born and raised in my native Haiti until the age of 17, coming to America, learning English, 2 years in Miami and then Massachusetts, my adult life has been a wonderful uphill climb so far.  Now 45 years old, I have 18 years of experience as a Registered Nurse and I feel strongly that it is time for me to advance my career and exercise my increasing capacity for leadership. I have many years of experience working primarily with patients who have diabetes and I look forward to continuing to fight this dreadful disease and care for those who suffer from it after completing your program, both here in Massachusetts and back in Haiti as well.

The difficult time that I had upon my arrival in America, struggling to earn a high school degree, was complicated by the arrival of my two children. I had no parents of my own in America to help me and I ended up having to send my children home to my mother in Haiti—visiting them once a year. But by 1996 I was in a position to care for them again and they came back to the USA.  I finished my Associates Degree in 1997 and after that supporting them was a little easier. Since my children came back in 1996, I have only returned to Haiti for my father’s funeral and a handful of other occasions. Nevertheless, I anticipate building new, professional bonds with Haiti once I become a nurse practitioner, participating in more and more medical missions, etc.

I am proud of the fact that I put myself through college working as a nursing assistant, and helped my mother and sibling come to America. I always worked 2 jobs as a single parent. Both of my children have now finished college. Now is my time. Most recently, I have been studying online in preparation for enrollment in your program for the Fall of 2016. I thank you for considering my application.

Working together as a team we strive to create the best personal statement possible, to give you an advantage over other applicants to nursing school. I am an experienced professional who has read and edited thousands of  Personal Statements and Statements of Purpose. Most editing services only focus on the technical aspects of the statements: grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Instead, I consider the more important aspects; personal tone, flow, and content. Most importantly, I help you express your creative ideas with respect to your long term goals and your contribution to humanity and society. The final product of my editing may be the beginning of your professional success, a solid investment in your future.

I have been drafting statements on behalf of nurses now for the past 20 years. Writing statements is not always fun, and the older I get the more mental and emotional energy it takes for me to do a good job. This is one of the reasons why I have developed a priority focus on nurses, writing more statements in this area than any other, because I admire the dedication of nurses, their orientation of service and giving. Nurses are generally among the finest people on the planet, on human and emotional levels, because of their ethic of service. Thus, when I help a nurse succeed, I am inspired by her/his story.

I have spent many years investigating what makes a Statement for admission to nursing school as effective as possible, what programs and institutions in the area of nursing are looking for in applicants: specific qualities, interests, and characteristics--all of which I will emphasize in your essay. Character is especially critical and I am an expert at making you look exceptional. It is all in the wording and I like to think I have a natural gift for statement expression. My own special strength is in the emotional eloquence of nursing. I admit that on a few occasions, tears well up in my eyes while writing a statement for nursing school; it is a most enriching experience and I count myself most privileged.
